Maddisun debuts her eclectic mix of personal songs on new album, "Self Reflections"

Review by Austin Sher

Last week on August 14th, 2020, Maddisun put out her indie rock-centric album, Self Reflections, that we’re absolutely loving! Read on to hear our thoughts on the record as well as some background information on the artist herself.

If you’re unaware, Maddisun is a Canadian singer and songwriter with dreamy soulful vocals and expressive lyrics. Her feel-good, Indie- rock music is written from the heart and she loves to make the audience feel what she’s feeling and have them get as lost in the lyrics and vocal melodies as she does. One of the best parts about the album is that she actually received a full music grant to record it! The story goes that she went completely off the grid to an undisclosed studio in the Canadian mountains to record. What you’ll hear is a very natural and roots sounding record, that’s filled with a handful of eclectic twists and turns.

Coming in at a runtime of 40 minutes long spanning a total track length of 11, Self Reflections proved to be a wonderful and unique experience that we’re highly recommending. In addition to loving it, it’s been on basically nonstop since Maddisun came our way. While we don’t want to give too much away, we’ll let you know that there isn’t a skippable track on the record.

From start to finish, Maddisun takes you on a journey through, you guessed it, her ‘self reflections’. As fantastic as the instrumentation is, the clear standout are the artist’s vocals. The way she shows off her range, the way she tells the stories of her life, it’s really truly something incredible to behold. Considering a grant was given to her in order to record the album, it’s no surprise that it exceeds expectations as much as you’d think it would.

While we’ll let you be the judge yourselves, we obviously had favorite songs on the album. More specifically, the opener “Mountain Air”, “Wild Roses”, and “Days Off” stood out. That’s not to say the rest of the album lacked in any way, but everyone has their favorites. We highly recommend and encourage you to listen, so with that being said, stop reading and start listening!
