Lori Triplett debuts yet another astounding record, titled "Slow Poison"

Review by Austin Sher

Officially released this past week on October 16th, 2020, Lori Triplett has finally put forth her unbelievably catchy new EP, Slow Poison. Without giving too much away, we are absolutely in love with it! Please read along with us as we share our thoughts on the record.

For those who have been missing out or unaware, Lori Triplett is a singer and songwriter currently based out of Nashville, TN. Originally from Ohio, Lori has written, co-produced, & released 2 full-length albums, Dawn (2004) & Safe Place to Land (2009), co-produced by Lee J. Turner, long-time band mate of Darius Rucker. Her latest work, Slow Poison, was written & recorded in Nashville, TN & produced by Chad Carouthers. Triplett wrote or co-wrote all the songs on the project.  Her work features strong themes of love, loss, hope, redemption, & commentary on humanity.

Slow Poison focuses on many themes in the forms of stories, sounds, and personal yet very relatable experiences that are likely to somehow fall right into place in your life.  Combining a dramatic feel with light electronic elements and production, the heart of the EP is about finding a love and respect for yourself in difficult places so that you can in turn love others better in difficult places. Each song speaks about the almost inevitable journeys we are all bound to take in life at some point or another, and how those journeys tend to shape us as individuals.

For the fans of Ingrid Michaelson, Phoebe Bridgers, Kate Walsh, and even glimmers of Kacey Musgraves, you’re going to instantly fall in love with Lori Triplett’s work. Even for those who may be unfamiliar with these artists, it wouldn’t take prior knowledge of her work to instantly become a fan. Speaking from personal experience, it takes a lot for a record to come across as accessible these days, but Slow Poison is the perfect example of a gratification that comes after your first full listen.

Coming in at 6 total tracks, spanning 26 wonderful minutes, it’s as much of an experience as it is a musical listen. Triplett takes you on a journey of her life within her deep lyrics and stunning vocal deliveries. Instrumentally speaking, she keeps the listener guessing as to what’s going to come next. There’s plenty of acoustics featured, however the backing atmosphere and world she’s created in her sound is truly something else. The production on the album is also top notch. Listening on a high quality pair of headphones or sound system is paramount to the full listening experience. Missing out on the bright shimmers and vocals would be doing it a complete disservice.

At this point, it would be close to impossible to pick a favorite track on the EP as every song is as quality as it gets. That’s sort of the best part of EP’s as opposed to full length albums, there’s no room for filler. This proves especially true on Slow Poison, the output is a 10 out of 10, we humbly mean that.

With all this being said, we are highly recommending and suggesting you take the time out of your busy lives to take a listen for yourself, we promise you won’t regret it.
