La Palma share their laidback jam, “Sábado", off their forthcoming 2nd LP
Review by Austin Sher
Off their forthcoming 2nd album, La Palma have shared a beautifully relaxed new single, titled “Sábado". Please do yourselves a big favor and read along with us for our full thoughts on the track, in addition to a bio on the band as well.
Before we get into the review itself, it’s always best to familiarize yourself with the artists behind the music. So for those who may be unaware, La Palma is the musical duo of Chris Walker and Tim Gibbon, based out of San Francisco and Washington DC. While the two are currently not in the same place, La Palma's music is created differently in more of a correspondence-style, passing recordings back and forth to build “textured compositions that glean from everyday sounds and experiences, steeped in beachy psych-pop and indie folk.” The ultimate laid back nature of their music screams sunny beaches and San Francisco, so if that’s what you’re looking for, look no further because you’ve found it.
Speaking directly on "Sábado" though, this is just a taste of what you’re going to be getting off their upcoming sophomore record. According to Chris and Tim, “the song inhabits the liminal space between awake and asleep, the moment of surrender at the day’s end where reality and dream collide. It is a state much like the surreal restlessness of living through 2020’s pandemic, social unrest, wildfires, and electoral anxiety”. Now that the election is over, we can take that out, but it certainly puts at ease the rest of life’s anxieties as well. The calming and serene wash that comes over you as finger picking comes through one channel and a soft vocal delivery on the other is truly the shot of relaxation we needed in our own life.
Now while "Sábado" only comes in at a little over two minutes in run time, we feel that it acts as a teaser for what’s to come on the second record. These days it takes an impressive song to make us fans, so the fact that La Palma achieved that in only two minutes is impressive in its own right. So much so that we had to go back and listen to their first self-titled album. Not surprisingly in the slightest, but it’s every bit as good as we wanted it to be.
The only real con we’d like to point out is that it just wasn’t long enough. An extended version of the track would be beautiful, but we’ll wait for it in the context of the full album to really give our opinion. Through the unique atmosphere they’ve created, the bits of whistling, and a laid back guitar solo, we can confidently say that this one’s a winner. We’re absolutely recommending and encouraging all readers to stop reading, and start listening. Get to it!
