Kolby Knickerbocker crafts emotional experience on EP, "Over and Over"
Released earlier this month on April 2nd, 2021, Kolby Knickerbocker has made his return with an all-new EP, Over and Over. Do yourselves a huge favor and read along as we share our complete thoughts on the record, as well as a background on this talented artist.
After starting his musical career back in 2004 while a sophomore in college, Kolby Knickerbocker has shared a handful of releases over the years such as Red Dust (2015) and Animus (2016). His music has been featured in television shows like MTV’s Degrassi High, 90210, Heart Signal, and Barely Breathing. On this newest record Over and Over though, he’s done nothing but impress us on this incredible output.
According to Kolby, on this EP he’s set out to “explore moments in the everyday that contribute to the human condition.” One of the first things that you’ll notice, nearly immediately, is that the record relies heavily on its deep and complex lyricism. We’ll say right now that the production here is beyond astounding, however we couldn’t help but take in each and every word. Delivered beautifully by Knickerbocker, not only does he get his message across, but he does so in a way that could bring a tear to your eye.
There’s really no way that we could get through this without touching on the production side of things, it was just that impressive. On the title track “Over and Over”, Kolby recorded 15 separate vocal parts to recreate a gospel choir effect. Certain moments on that particular song, or even the rest, brought multiple shivers to our collective spines. Don’t be afraid if it happens to you as well, just accept that this music is moving.
Now we’ll be honest here, this EP was our first introduction to the music of Kolby Knickerbocker, but let it be known right now that it will not be our last. We’ve assigned ourselves some “musical homework” to really explore the evolution of his music and see how far he’s come to today. It’s not often that a four song record can have that much power and oomph to it, but he’s managed to prove us wrong and craft an imagery-filled and cohesive album that all should be able to relate to in one way or another.
At this point, it should come as no surprise that we’re going to highly suggest you give Over and Over a listen. While it’s definitely an emotional experience, it’s one that we feel you’d be better off having in your life. Like we mentioned in the beginning, do yourselves a favor and get on this and everything else the artist has to offer. Enjoy!
