Kevin Johnson & Nick Bowen collaborate on adventurous LP, "Calm To Chaos"
Collaborating together on an adventurous and risk taking new record, Kevin Johnson and Nick Bowen have ultimately crushed it with Calm To Chaos. Read on as we share our complete thoughts on the record, in addition to a background on the artist.
Both currently based out of upstate New York in a town called Webster, Kevin Johnson and Nick Bowen have been playing and writing music for over 10 years now. While their talents are usually focused on the guitar, they’ve expanded their repertoire for so much more, and it 100% shows on their 5th studio record Calm To Chaos. It’s a sincerely fun and uplifting record, which is exactly why we’re urging everyone out there to give it a spin as soon as you can.
Coming in at a whopping 20 tracks that span right under an hour, we were hit with a cavalcade of initial impressions after our primary listen. The first one that rises to the top is the sheer amount of ingenuity and out of the box thinking that’s come in all facets of the album. Considering there are so many songs, it’s certainly got a denseness and complexity that runs rampant, but at the same time it legitimately sounds like nothing we’ve heard before. There’s a massive amount of different styles and genres that come into play, though mainly rooted in Rock, however they’re no strangers to experimentation in the slightest. Taking the title track “Calm To Chaos” as an example, there’s an ethereal and downright guttural amount of emotion that flows out within the vocals and composition.
On the production side of things, we really enjoyed how they sort of went with a lofi approach. The vocals come into the forefront at times when they need to make a statement, but honestly the flow, sound, and mixing is extremely even throughout. During our listen, it felt as though we were on a rollercoaster ride with twists, turns, and the feeling of being on the edge of our seat. It was difficult to know where things may have been headed, but it truly added to the allure of it all. This is a record in which two friends and close collaborators let it all hang out and didn’t hold back any ideas. There’s easily something for everyone here, and no matter what subgenres of rock you like, most of them show themselves.
Without a doubt, we recommend you give this a listen. Please go ahead and check out the links below to do so, follow along, and of course to stay tuned for all major updates and information.
