Having had the opportunity to experience the slow rollout of Jessamine Barham’s EP Outsider has been an absolute delight, but now that it’s out in full, she’s over delivered in every capacity. Please read our glowing review of the record, as well as an update on the artist.

Leading up to the big day with major releases like “Locked Door” or “Bow Down”, we thankfully had a taste of what was to come on Jessamine Barham’s EP, Outsider. As we’ve been anxiously waiting for the other two tracks to be shared, the artist has ultimately put together something beautifully cohesive and expressive all in all. If this happens to be your introduction to Jessamine’s music, prepare yourselves for an adventurous ride of original artistry and catchy tunes.

Blending together a unique and eclectic mix of dark pop and indie folk, Outsider does an impeccable job of fusing the two in a way that we can only describe as creating outside of the box. Coming in at just four songs that run around 6 minutes in length, it’s a concise and straight to the point listen, but a record that completely packs a punch in its lyricism and themes covered. With musical influences like Regina Spektor and Epica playing a part in the tone of these tracks, Jessamine has still managed to carve out her own niche in a genre that consistently feels like a recycling of others’ music. Outsider breaks the mold of the norm and completes its vision with an edge at the end.

We’ve provided our thoughts on the aforementioned singles, but the new ones like “Puppet Girl” and “My Enemy” filled in the gaps where necessary. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, we wish these songs were longer, but there’s no point in extending something if you’ve made your point contextually. Jessamine leads the way once again with her revealing vocals, slowing painting a picture of personal experiences as the record goes on. These songs certainly lean more rock-forward as well, a genre that we felt was fitting given the delivery of her vocals too. Overall, we know this is 100% something we’ll be coming back to in order to relieve our own angst and confide in something that stays true to itself.
