Jeffrey Chan crafts a nostalgic sounding single, "You Only Want Me When I'm Gone"

With his second single of the year, titled “You Only Want Me When I’m Gone”, our introduction to Jeffrey Chan’s music was nothing short of extraordinary. We loved it! Read on for our full featured review of the track, in addition to a background on this emerging artist.

Currently based out of Sydney, Jeffrey Chan is putting together a varied mix of indie pop that has influences of dreamy synthesizers and a massive dose of retro nostalgia. Combining elements that span decades in sound, “You Only Want Me When I’m Gone” dives thematically into putting yourself first in a relationship and realizing the right time to end things. It’s ultimately a bittersweet message, but the song itself is the definition of wonderful.

Bordering the line of a break up song but ultimately about finding strength in yourself, Jeffrey Chan has shown off exactly what it means to be a strong songwriter. In today’s musical landscape that relies so heavily on gimmicks and cheap production tricks, one of the first things we felt here was just how pure and honest the song was in its message. It takes a big heart to write from personal experiences, but it makes the entire package of the song so much better when it’s as catchy as this was in the end.

As this was our first foray into Jeffrey’s music, we honestly didn’t know what to expect, however we came out of our initial listen with a ton of respect and the need to follow along in his blossoming career. Considering this single output was so strong, we can only assume the rest are of the same caliber, which has us quite excited to dig in in the near future. If this happens to be your introduction, let us tell you right now you’re in for an absolute treat.

One of the last things we’d like to point out here is just how effortless this song came off, but with such a high quality at the same time. Jeffrey’s vocals are certainly unique in their delivery, but its also what had us glued to every word coming out of his mouth. The sincerity and passion that came through had this genuine feeling to it that we won’t forget going forward.

With all that being said though, do yourselves a big favor and please check out the links below where you can listen, follow along, and stay tuned for everything else he’s got on the way.
