Hi Jacob Colon! How are you today?
I’m feeling great.
Can you start by telling us what initially drew you to Electronic Music, how did
you realise your passion for the genre?
When I was younger, I used to make Hip Hop and RnB beats while playing live keys for my local church. While growing my skills in this genre, I sometimes had difficulties connecting with Artists who could bring my ideas from beats into a complete song. Of course, I didn’t sing or rap so I was just the Producer. As time went on, I slowly got into House music as it was getting bigger in the US with Artists like Calvin Harris and David Guetta leading the scene. Here I saw that you didn’t really need a singer or rapper to complete a song and if anything, the Producer was the Artist. With that being said, I continued to expand my skills into House music and slowly developed my unique sound, establishing a style that showcases a variety of different influences.
Who are your biggest inspirations within Electronic Music?
Oscar G, Martinez Bros, Calvin Harris, Mau P. I feel these guys have stayed consistent with their sound and have expanded the minds of Producers to create their own unique sound.
What are you listening to currently? Are there any new trends or sounds that
you are finding particularly inspiring?
I’ve been listening to a lot of UK drill beats. I like the dark vibe it has and how I can connect it to inspire Techno sounds. Techno has a dark yet powerful energy to it that I like, though I don’t particularly make Techno music I can still incorporate that vibe into my drum rhythms and create something new.
Can you tell us your top three favourite tracks of all time?
‘World Hold On’ - Fisher remix
‘She Will’ - Drake and Lil Wayne
‘Check’ - Kojo Funds feat. Raye
How would you say your musical influences can be heard in your own work?
My drum sound is unique. It carries a lot of energy and groove like an incorporation of Big Room and Tech House, while my sound selection can be connected to a lot of current Hip Hop music.
How would you say attending live shows inspires you?
Not sure, but I’m usually staring at the DJ or listening to the mix as if I’m about to grade the DJ afterwards lol. It’s more of comparing and listening to how clean the blends are and how I can use that to upgrade my skills. Or even what songs are being mixed and how the vibe changes along with those tracks.
What genres outside of Electronic Music do you take inspiration from?
I mentioned a couple earlier, but it ranges from Hip Hop, Reggaeton, Afro Beats, UK Hip Hop, or Drill.
How have your influences changed as you’ve matured as an Artist?
I’ve become more attentive to the newness of my sound rather than just completing as many as I can. I want people to say, “this is new” when listening to my tracks.
Is there an artist that you enjoy listening to that might surprise fans, perhaps a
guilty pleasure?
Maybe a little Justin Bieber or Ed Sheeran.
