Elderly Goat make their debut on thrilling live record, "Live At Quincy St."
Review by Austin Sher
In a year where live music has lacked big time, Elderly Goat are making it up with a stellar new record, Live At Quincy St. We are absolutely loving it, please read along with us as we share our thoughts on the album, in addition to a background on the band as well.
From the Twin Cities in Minnesota, Elderly Goat are a four piece psychedelic rock band who have just put out this live record as a debut, in lieu of a properly produced album. Now normally it’s the other way around, however given the circumstances of the world right now, we think it’s unbelievably cool and commendable that they’ve gone this route.
Recorded during a very intimate house show they played in their singers basement, with their closest friends as the crowd, this record truly hits in all the best ways possible. Considering we’ve been missing live music on an hour to hour basis at this point, it’s so refreshing to review a live record, as there’s been a serious lackluster amount headed our way. So with the release of Live At Quincy St., we’re back in our happy place, especially because the music is top notch.
Coming in at 8 minutes, spanning 40 minutes of greatness, this album starts off as a slow burner, but ultimately leads to a series of impressive psych jams that showcase every member in Elderly Goat’s talents. In addition to the songs played being great, the audience interaction gives it such an authentic feel that we couldn’t help but smile from ear to ear throughout the listen.
Now while a live record is certainly a unique way to make your debut to the world, we’re hoping that the band can get into a studio as soon as it's safe and possible so we can hear the professionally recorded version. That’s not to say that anything in this version was lacking, however certain production techniques and proper mixing always do favors for big psychedelic sounds like theirs.
While it would be extremely difficult to pick a favorite off the record, there were certainly some tracks that were quite memorable off the first listen. Specifically, “An Ode To Earth”, “The Spiral Condition”, and the album closer, “Cut You Down”. All fantastic and all did a thorough job of showing the range that the band brings in full. With that being said though, the record is cohesive enough that we highly recommend listening from start to finish as intended.
For now though, kick off your holiday weekend with a listen, we promise you won’t regret it! For all things Elderly Goat, to listen, and to keep up with all future releases and information, please check out the following links below.
