Eggscellent let loose on their catchy, fun, and relevant new single, "I Don't Have Money!"

Released yesterday on August 21st, 2020, Eggscellent have put forth their debut single, “I Don’t Have Money!”. Please read along with us as we break down our thoughts on the track, as well as a bit of background and insight on the band.
Before we get into our thoughts on the music, it’s always best to familiarize ourselves with the artists behind the music. One thing the band let us know was that their goal is not to make pop perfect music or to create an image that has a deeper meaning; they’re just trying to make themselves laugh. Listen to the sing even one time through and that will come through immediately. I’m sure they’ve gotten this comparison before, but they’re like the comedy version of Vulfpeck. Extremely talented in musicianship and instrumentation, but with laughable and relatable lyrics.
The Eggscellent band is composed of some of the top musicians in the Downtown Los Angeles / USC area. Not only are they masters of their instruments, but also scholars of music history and the inner workings of both jazz and pop genres. After working tirelessly at perfecting technique and style, they just want to create music that makes them laugh. Eggscellent is their outlet to explore and experiment with sounds that can be seen as unusual for its genre. This should be viewed with the mindset that this music is not meant to be taken seriously. Their music is wild, energetic, and kind of challenging, but the main goal is to make the listener chuckle to themselves and forget about stuff. It's not meant to be 'good,' it's just meant to be fun.
As mentioned, the first thing you’ll notice when the song gets going is just how immensely talented each and every member of the band is. While the lyrical content isn’t meant to be taken seriously, although who couldn’t use more money, the musicianship is absolutely top tier. The song is loaded with various instruments, to the point where it became hard to acknowledge who was doing what. In our opinions, that’s the sign of a good song.
As lovers of funk, a full horns section, and catchy lyrics, this song absolutely rocked for us. Most of the time the music that gets sent to us is serious in nature, so this was a perfect break to really just enjoy the background of it all. You can 100% guarantee that you can consider us fans and we’ll greatly be looking forward to the next release from Eggscellent.
