Cyderian Son unleash a hard rocking new single, "Mayans"
Review by Austin Sher
Released back in October, but still as rocking as ever, Cyderian Son have let loose their most recent single, “Mayans”. Do yourselves a huge favor and read along with us as we share our thoughts on the track, in addition to a background on the band as well.
Currently based out of Staten Island, NY, Cyderian Son are making waves within the metal and progressive music scene. Following up their 2016 debut record, [R.E:]M.ILY, they’ve made their return with an absolute stunner of a track. Set to release their newest EP Necropolis soon in 2021, we’re thrilled that they’re off to a great start with the release of “Mayans”.
Thankfully though, the band gave us a bit of background on the origins of “Mayans”, in which they let us know, “Mayans is about developing a strong sense of self in the face of external and internal pressures, not getting distracted on the path to becoming the fully developed version of yourself, and accepting the differences between what you see and what the rest of the world sees. The song references The Popol Vuh, a holy text of the K’iche’ people before the Spanish conquest of Mexico.”
We’ll be completely honest with you, this was our first deep dive into the music of Cyderian Son, but thankfully we got here when we did, because we were completely blown away by just this single. Coming in at just a little over 5 minutes, the band managed to jam pack an intense amount of emotion and drama into just one song. For the lover of metal, prog, or even just plain rock and roll, there’s something for everyone to love here.
Instrumentally, this track is a powerhouse. All throughout the experience, you’ll notice the impressive switches of time signatures, wonderfully off beat yet perfect drumming, and a set of guitar riffs towards the end that could melt your face off. We obviously don’t want to give too much away, because we’d prefer you took a listen for yourself, but it’s got us completely hyped up on their album that’s set to drop sometime this year. No rush to the band though, we know these things take tons of time and effort.
One of our favorite parts of the entire song was just how perfectly it built up, to then explode in a wall of sound towards the end. Not that we thought things were slow going in the beginning, but the lead singer’s smooth vocals sort of reel you into a false sense of security, only to then blindside you towards the middle once things are in full swing. The emotion added because of it was a pivotal point in our loving this song, and now you could easily consider us fans.
With this all being said though, this is absolutely a band and song worth checking out in full. If you like what you heard, which you will, check out their debut as well, it’s fantastic.
