Treating the fans to an end of year gift in the form of an all new album called People in Cars, Curse of Lono have gone above and beyond on this release. Please read on for our stunning review of the record, as well as a refresher on the band.

After an incredibly tough year of losing loved ones, mixed with grief and uncertainty, Curse of Lono’s latest record People in Cars is a personal experience chalk full of real and emotional stories. As impressive as it is on the lyrical front, it doesn’t dip in quality on the sonic side either. Filled with atmospheric tones from start to finish, there legitimately wasn’t a single dull moment in our listen. You’re going to really appreciate the true artistry on this one.

Inspired by some of the greats like The National, Wilco, and Leonard Cohen, Curse of Lono’s sound here is very obviously mixed, but also carves something special out for itself too. It certainly falls under the umbrella of Rock, however you’ll be able to pick apart pieces of alternative and country as well that appear within the vocal delivery and style. At 11 total songs, spanning right around 52 minutes in length, the band doesn’t hesitate to experiment or show you exactly what they’re made of in terms of creativity and depth.

While it felt like there were so many standouts, we have to pay close attention to the stellar production provided on People in Cars. The mixing as well deserves a shoutout, because every member of the band and their respective instruments gets a moment to shine whether its the focus or not. Truly, some of the rhythm section and inventive bass lines here are going to be stuck in our heads for a while. Specifically on “Think I’M Alright Now” is what has been popping into our head.

Detailing such a tumultuous year could not have been easy for this band, especially having to sit there and relive the trauma while writing the lyrics. However they powered through and delivered up a thought provoking, compelling, and seriously original sounding record that we can confidently recommend to all the music listeners out there. If this is your introduction to the band, there’s no better place to start than listening in full.
