A collaboration between two wonderful artists, Conor Spellane and Ben Foerg, has resulted in a fantastic new single, “The Thin Ice”. Please read along with us as we share our thoughts on the track, as well as a background on the guys behind the music.

It should go without saying, but COVID-19 has been incredibly tough on entertainers, potentially the toughest. Overnight they found themselves without a stage, an audience, or a way to make money. Aside from the monetary aspect, the inability to showcase their talents in front of a crowd is, frankly, a brutal reality.

During the early stages of quarantine though, Ben Foerg (The Absurd) and Conor Spellane (Karma Vulture) decided they may as well take advantage of their newly found time to do something they had been too busy to do otherwise: make a record just for fun. So they pulled out their acoustics and played well into the wee hours of the morning.

The result was a diverse, genre-defying group of songs steeped in vocal harmonies, witty poignant lyrics, unusual arrangements, and any number of flowery descriptors not usually associated with their respective heavy rock bands. The first of these tunes is titled “The Thin Ice” and is out everywhere that you’re able to stream music. We’d like to make it as clear as possible, their hard work was ultimately used in the best way, because we’re loving what we heard here.

At just over 4 minutes in runtime, the artists jam packed a ton of unique sounding acoustic arrangements into one succinct and memorable song. As far as genres go, it’s a bit of a toss up for what we could nail this down as. It features aspect of good old Americana, a bit of indie rock within the vocals, and even glimmers of country here and there. Regardless of what you want to call it, it rocks, and we’re absolutely looking forward to more releases from this up and coming duo.

It’s unreal to us, still to this day, that two people can sit in a room with no ideas and come out with a song that can move you. Whether it be the themes in which they discuss within the lyrics, the moving instrumentation that keeps your ears glued, or just the fact they’ve managed to stay motivated at these times, it’s all quite impressive. As mentioned, we’re absolutely looking forward to whatever else these two come up with. It looks like there will be more on the way sooner than you think.
