Chris Thorogood tells his tales on debut, "A Very Special Christmas Wish"
Completely unrelated to the holiday season, Chris Thorogood has a debut album out called A Very Special Christmas Wish and it is seriously fantastic! Please read on for our full review of the record, in addition to a background on this talented artist.
Experimenting with genre throughout, but mainly an indie rock record, Chris Thorogood’s A Very Special Christmas Wish is the journey of battling mental health issues over the years. Inviting us for an album’s worth of stories, Chris breaks down certain life experiences, but in a sonically beautiful way across this lovely sounding record. This was quite the experience as a whole and we sincerely hope everyone out there gives it a close and focused listen.
Jam-packed with inventive lyricism, highly grooveable rhythm sections, and so much more, you instantly get lost in Chris’ stories. While of course the context of these songs are close and personal, we need to pay special attention to just how creative the instrumental sections really are. We’re suckers for good drumming patterns and this record is seriously packed with so much originality in that sense. You’ll find spacious guitar tones as well and bass lines that are virtually guaranteed to get your head bobbing as soon as possible.
For us, we had some personal favorite songs like “Quirks”, “The Witness”, and “The Turn Around”, however really there isn’t a glaringly bad track here. We’d recommend a front to back listen to hear the story unfold as well as to really feel the atmosphere in sound and style that he’s putting out for everyone to enjoy. As this was our first introduction to Chris’ music as a whole, especially because this is his debut, we can’t wait to follow along on his journey for more music. He’s clearly nailed down a niche that we love so much, so it’s going to be quite the interesting ride to hear how he follows it up. Whenever that may be, we’ll undoubtedly be listening the moment it comes out.
