Cagri Raydemir, an independent musician and music producer, has just released his 18th record, Black or White. With all lyrics, music, vocals, instruments, programming, arrangements, mixing, mastering, and artwork done by Raydemir himself, it's clear that this is a personal and passionate project for the artist. It’s easily one as good if not better than the last record we review of this, Shortage of Identity, and we’re quite excited for you to give it an uninterrupted listen.
The EP is a mix of genres, including alternative, rock, blues, and prog. Featured guests on the EP include Julian Hesse on trumpet for "Undeniable Manifestation" and Salih Korkut Peker on Cümbüş for "False Certainty". What's impressive is that Raydemir recorded the EP at his home studio, showcasing his talent as a multi-instrumentalist and his ability to take on all aspects of the production process. From programming to mixing, and even occasionally creating the artwork, Raydemir has poured his heart and soul into this release. The passion comes through effortlessly in the vocal cadence, but really the entirety of the listen is an experience to behold.
The EP kicks off with the title track, "Canary in a Coalmine" a grunge rockish number that sets the tone for the rest of the record. The guitar riffs are tight and catchy, and Raydemir's vocals are emotive and sincere. "Undeniable Manifestation" features Julian Hesse on trumpet, adding a jazzy and soulful element to the track. The instrumentation is layered and intricate, showcasing Raydemir's skills as a producer.
"False Certainty" incorporates Cümbüş, a traditional Turkish instrument, into the mix, adding a unique and cultural touch to the EP. The track is slow-burning and builds to a powerful and emotional crescendo. "Justifiable Hands to Play" closes out the EP with a haunting and introspective track that showcases Raydemir's songwriting abilities, among every single other one of his many artistic capabilities. It’s one of those well rounded listens that gives you a little bit of everything that you need all at once!
Overall, Black or White is an impressive EP that highlights Raydemir's talent as a musician and producer. It's a personal and passionate project that showcases his versatility and skill across multiple genres. With this release, Raydemir cements his place as a rising star in the independent music scene.
