For those potentially out of the loop, Brenda Carsey is a multi-talented vocalist, songwriter, producer, and instrumentalist currently based out of Los Angeles. We’ve reviewed her extensively in the past, so you can only imagine our sheer delight to know that she had another full-length record on the way. It’s called Cognizance and might just be her most mature and cohesive work yet. Taking years to accomplish, we can confidently claim that the end result has surpassed all of our wildest expectations. Of course, we’re urging everyone to listen and to check out our chat to learn a little bit more about it.

Coming in at 13 total tracks that span right around 50 minutes, Brenda has crafted an immaculate and truly cohesive album that takes the listener on an emotional yet thoughtful experience through vivid lyricism, a beautiful display of instrumentation, and of course her dynamic vocals that consistently set the tone. We spoke about this more in-depth, but stylistically and genre-wise, Cognizance embodies a ton of different elements that embody R&B, Soul, Progressive Pop, and always a signature essence of her own that makes it unique. Not only does she constantly hook you in with exotic melodies and endless catchy riffs, but the lyricism and storytelling is the definition of a masterclass. From beginning to end, she paints a picture of her own personal experience and journey, yet also leaves the door open for all who listen to interpolate meaning for themselves.

Certain stand out tracks for us would be the opener “Just Trying to Do My Thing”, “Rebel Walls”, and “Man of Mine”, but due to the versatility, there’s absolutely something for everyone here. It’s taken the best passages from her record’s past and created a work that’s bursting with passion, love, and sincerity. Getting to hear Brenda talk all about its origins and all who were involved was seriously the cherry on top to our initial listen. Without a doubt, we know we’ll be coming back for more in no time.
