Betty Reed slows things down on deeply personal single, "Shallow End"
Slowing things down a bit and pivoting her sound slightly, we are absolutely loving this other side of Betty Reed. Please read on for a look into our thoughts on “Shallow End”, as well as an update on this immensely talented artist.
Following up her last single “Without You” which we adored, Betty Reed has continued her hot streak in 2022 with another lovely musical endeavor, “Shallow End”. Reeling it in and focusing heavily on her dynamic vocal presence, this song instantly feels like a slow burner that builds in anticipation and explodes to a cavalcade of emotion towards the end. We instantly resonated with the feeling and are obviously urging everyone to give it a listen.
On the background of it all, this song is about “the complex and conflicting emotions I experience when in the throes of depression. When depression sets in, it’s not like I'm in the deep end of a pool struggling to not drown. It’s more like this feeling that I'm floundering in the shallow end and there is an easy way to rescue myself”. If you’ve experience this in any capacity, you know how bad it can be, but our sincere thoughts are that having the ability to get the feelings out there in a song could help to combat it. This is a deeply personal single that gives listeners an open door look into Betty, who is an artist on the grand stage expressing herself, but might just be a stranger to you. The vulnerability shown not only in the lyrics, but in the way she delivers them was a major standout during our many listens.
Instrumentally, it’s definitely a bit more stripped back than previous rock-forward releases, but honestly this shows off the breadth of her capabilities in the best way possible. We already knew she was a fantastic songwriter and vocalist, but the uniqueness within the composition goes to show an amazing ability in musicianship. The song floats by effortlessly over its three minute runtime as you get sucked into the storyline, but even if you’re not a lyrics person, the minimalism allows you to focus on so many other facets. This is a perfect addition to her discography and a wonderful jumping off point to exploring the rest of her music.
