Ashton York breaks down his 2nd full length LP, "Nightmare In Your Arms" - Interview

Fresh off the release of his second full length record, Ashton York has managed to top himself on Nightmare In Your Arms. Luckily for us, we got the opportunity to speak with the artist for a full and in-depth interview. Please watch it below.

For those somehow out of the loop, Ashton York is a Bay Area-based singer and songwriter who’s continuing to carve out his path and sound within his celebrated discography. Taking cues from some indie greats such as Sufjan Stevens and Big Thief’s Adrienne Lenker, there’s no doubt in our minds or ears that what this artist is creating is fresh and original. During our conversation with Ashton, we covered a variety of topics ranging from his process of creating, the meaning behind the record, and a peek into what 2023 has to offer.

Coming in at 15 total tracks, spanning right around 50 minutes in length, our initial impression on the first listen was how unbelievably cohesive and succinct this record was. From the opener on “Phil’s Blessing”, Ashton immediately immerses you as a listener into this calm and serene space, paving the way for nearly an hour’s worth of vivid lyricism, compelling instrumentation, and his warm yet inviting vocals. While it’s definitely reminiscent of a prime Sufjan Stevens through his vocals, we truly only see that as a plus considering he’s one of our favorite artists. Through the record’s listen, you’re also presented with a great deal of emotions through the themes being covered. During our chat with Ashton, we were so thankful to get a background on what some of these songs and ultimately the record mean as a whole.

With his debut album being released four years ago at this point, we’ve now taken the opportunity to explore the rest of his music, and you can audibly feel the massive strides in nearly every facet. We got into the nitty gritty speaking directly on how he starts out his musical process and exactly what it takes to put the finishing touches on his records. For us, Nightmare In Your Arms is going to become a repeated listen, marking the exact vibe and mood that we’d want for something a little more chill and relaxed.

If this is your introduction to his music, we can think of no better place to get yourself started. Go ahead and check out those links below to listen, follow along, and of course to keep up with much more on the way.
