Arthur Squawks over delivers on first part of upcoming debut EP, "Heroes"
Teasing out the first part of his EP titled Heroes, Arthur Squawks has absolutely left us wanting more with what we’ve heard so far. Continue reading for our full thoughts on the tracks, as well as a much needed background on the artist.
Self-described as a “birdlike humanoid storyteller”, we can confidently back up that claim as Arthur Squawks has certainly proved himself as more than just a proficient songwriter thus far. On the first part of his debut EP Heroes, this multi-talented musician has gifted the world with two classic sounding songs that not only hit us emotionally through its relaxing instrumentation, but paint a picture using imagery-filled lyricism and beyond. Of course, we’re urging everyone out there to give this a spin.
On the background of it all, Arthur has quickly gotten personal with us as the listeners, not knowing much about him previously. On the first song “I’m Yours”, he refers to it as his only true love song and claims that it’s “based on the notion that one can only love authentically once they realize their own mortality”. That’s sincerely about as deep thematically as it gets, and after pondering a bit, we fully agree. It’s not often an artist puts thoughts in our head that we never previously realized, but it’s definitely added to the charm that Arthur’s music as a whole brings. Obviously on the lyrical end he’s completely hit the mark in his storytelling, and combined with every other facet of these two songs, has proven himself as a versatile and well rounded musician.
Both of these songs hit in different ways sonically and stylistically too which was a major win. We got “The Strokes” vibes from the second one “Lament For A City Night (for T.S.)”, which is always a good thing, yet Arthur still managed to create something new within the indie rock niche. Nowadays that’s a feat in its own to have your own style and delivery, however this feels genuine from beginning to end. We’re seriously looking forward to whatever the rest of this EP shapes up to sound like, but in the meantime, you’ve got to give the first part a listen.
