Akira AK has released his expertly crafted new EP, Pearl
Review by Austin Sher
Akira AK has just released his impressive pop masterpiece EP, Pearl! We absolutely love what we heard and we think you will too. Read along as we give an in-depth look at what we thought about the record, as well as background information on the artist.
Originally inspired by the children’s television show, “Steven Universe”, the EP is specifically inspired by one of its characters, Pearl, which is actually what the EP is named after. According to Akira AK, “The EP is meant to be listened to from top to bottom as it tells the story of a person who goes from being totally dependent on a relationship – to the point where their whole identity is defined by it, to being completely independent, with the acknowledgement of their past behavior and how it makes them stronger.” After listening through multiple times, we couldn’t have possibly said it better ourselves. Speaking from experience, the lyrics on the 5 song record rang extremely true across the board.
Considering this is the followup to his first EP, Autotune + Heart, originally released in 2017, it instantly became conclusive that this was such a positive step in the right direction for the artist. While we’re not overly familiar with “Steven Universe”, Akira AK tells us that the more he got into the show, these specific ideas of identity, relationship building, and coping really began to take hold in powerful ways for him. We’d like to imagine that the introspection within the show ultimately led to this powerful and heartfelt piece of music. Exploring musical concepts and utilizing ideas from characters is quite a unique way to craft music, but whatever helped the process in this scenario, it all very clearly paid off.
Our immediate reactions from the EP were just how theatrical and dramatic the overall atmosphere felt from the beginning. It almost felt like high powered and exciting video game music, paired with an incredibly powerful voice speaking to us. Akira AK’s voice seriously shined bright throughout the 16 minute runtime and that is something he should be very proud of with himself. While the instrumentation was diverse and ear catching, the vocals were by far the standout for us across the board.
While I would definitely classify this as a pop record, it certainly had an indie feel to it, but with classic and detailed production. Overall it was a lot more catchy than I had anticipated and the melodies were expertly crafted. Multiple listens and streams through and I still found myself discovering wonderful things that I had missed on previous listens. If you’re looking for a truly unique piece of work, look no further, because Pearl is the EP for you!
