Phoenix Explode with Vibrance at Austin City Limits Weekend Two
Nearly four years after the last time we saw them at Austin City Limits, the legendary Phoenix took to the stage for an hour set jam packed with classic hits, songs from their upcoming record Alpha Zulu, and other major crowd favorites. Easily it was one of the best shows of the weekend, so please check out our full review below.
Truly, you don’t realize how many Phoenix songs you know until you’re deep in the crowd singing at the top of your lungs, enjoying every single moment. Although the set was criminally short based on their history of always delivering the hits, we saw basically everything that we needed to. Performing some of their best tracks off of Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, Ti Amo, and many more, it’s not just the music that you go to a Phoenix show for. If you’ve yet to experience the greatness, it’s a time filled with love, high energy, and vibrance that can barely be explained if you’re not standing there.
One way or another, you’ve probably heard their music in some capacity whether it be on the radio, a video game, or some other medium. While the entirety of the band brings their own significance to the performance, there’s basically no denying that Thomas Mars is the heartbeat of Phoenix. Putting his vocals on display in the midst of the heat, getting into it with the crowd (literally), there’s infinite twists and turns that you can experience, but you never really know what’s going to come next. Things typically start out on a hot streak, but as the show goes on, members end up crowd surfing and going absolutely wild given the crowd’s seemingly unlimited energy.
The only real “complaint” we can list is that an hour is not nearly enough time. We saw them in 2018 at Austin City Limits in what we think was a similar time slot and the shows were nearly identical, featuring a packed stage with a sea of people shouting every word. With a new album on the way, Alpha Zulu, they’re sure to continue their tour, so please don’t miss them in any capacity!
