Orville Peck Soothes the Souls at Hinterland Festival 2024
As the grounds of Hinterland Music Festival began to fill Friday evening as the crowd awaited the last performances of the night, Orville Peck emerged for the day's penultimate set. The cowboy and his band strutted on stage, instantly captivating the entirety of the audience with his unique blend of country and enigmatic stage presence.
Dressed in a lavish gold suit adorned with intricate pattern work, and of course, a matching eye mask, Peck's signature look was as striking as his music, adding an air of mystery to his performance. His voice, rich and haunting, echoed throughout the festival grounds, making each and every note resonate deeply with the crowd. The setlist included both fan favorites and new material from his brand new album Stampede, each song delivered with raw emotion and impeccable craftsmanship.
The crowd was visibly moved, swaying together and singing along as Peck's powerful vocals filled the air. Transitioning into one of his songs and sharing an anecdote about his time spent with country music icon Willie Nelson, Peck reflected on their time writing a song together titled “Cowboys are Frequently Secretly Fond of Each Other” and joked “because if you haven’t noticed by now, I, am a gay cowboy”.
His interaction with the audience created an intimate atmosphere, despite the vast festival setting. The performance was a seamless mix of theatricality and authenticity, showcasing both Peck’s indisputable talent and charisma. As the final chords faded, it was clear that Orville Peck had left an undeniable mark on the festival goers of Hinterland Music Festival, solidifying his reputation as a standout performer.
