Kassi Ashton on the Rise: A Conversation at Watershed Festival 2024
Amidst the stunning backdrop of the Gorge Amphitheatre, I had the pleasure of interviewing one of country music's most promising new voices, Kassi Ashton, just hours before her highly anticipated performance at Watershed 2024. Opening her set with the energetic and unapologetically honest track "Called Crazy," Kassi set the tone for an unforgettable evening. Our conversation delved into her latest work, career milestones, and aspirations, offering a glimpse into the artist behind the music.
The Thrill of Watershed
Starting off, I asked Kassi how she felt about performing at the iconic Gorge for Watershed 2024. "Oh, it feels great," she said with a radiant smile. "Views everywhere are amazing. I got a massage this morning, life is terrible," she joked, highlighting her good spirits and sense of humor.
"Called Crazy" and Real-Life Inspiration
Kassi's latest tracks, "Called Crazy" and "I Don't Want to Dance," have been making waves. When asked about them, she shared how "Called Crazy" is the radio single and that "It's just the cold hard truth, right? It's not like some Nashville hook or some poetic thing. Any man who has ever called me crazy has called me again." The authenticity in her music resonates with listeners, capturing the rawness of real-life experiences.
Recognition and Hard Work
Recently nominated for an ACM Award, Kassi reflected on the surprise and joy of such recognition. "Honestly, I think when they told me that I was nominated, I said, ‘no,’ because I couldn't believe it. And then when my friend shook me up and made me have a margarita, it was just ecstatic." Her down-to-earth attitude and dedication to her craft shine through as she describes the relentless work ethic that has brought her to this point.
A Night to Remember
As we discussed what fans could expect from her performance, Kassi promised an evening of empowerment and liberation. "We're here to shake off whatever is holding us down and to have a good time and to escape and find our inner bad bitch." With a set from 6:30 to 7:30, she assured that every moment would be special, filled with energy and connection.
Looking Ahead
Looking to the future, Kassi expressed excitement for her debut album, "Made from the Dirt," set to release on September 20th. "I'm really hoping that that just shoots to the moon. We get a big tour, we're on a bus, and I get to play for more and more people every night. I think that would be fabulous." Her goals are clear, and her passion for sharing her music with the world is palpable.
Dream Collaborations and Messages to Fans
When asked about dream collaborations, Kassi didn’t hesitate to mention Eric Church. "I'm a huge Eric Church fan. I think he's just like the baddest. So if he wanted to incorporate me into his life in any sort of manner, I would be honored." She also had a heartfelt message for her fans, both those at Watershed and those who couldn't make it: "I just hope that you leave my show feeling empowered, like a bad bitch. Like you can pull anything off and anything that's holding you down, you can push through now."
As the interview concluded, Kassi's genuine warmth and determination left a lasting impression. Her performance that night, as vibrant and dynamic as her personality, was a testament to her rising star in the country music scene. Watershed 2024 will undoubtedly be remembered as a significant milestone in Kassi Ashton's burgeoning career.
