Alison Wonderland Blends Cute And Creepy During Her EDC Orlando 2023 Set
Allison Wonderland (Alexandra Sholler) is an Australian DJ, singer and producer. She began her music career as a cellist for the Sydney Youth Opera. As she got older, she became more interested in indie and electronic music, so she began to play bass. Soon after, she began producing her own beats, which led to a complete redirection of her career. In 2015, her debut electronic album “Run” peaked at #6 on the ARIA charts. Allison Wonderland quickly rose to fame because of the use of her own voice over her tracks and her well-themed concert sets. She is a well-respected musician across Australia and the world for her advocacy of mental health organizations. After opening up to her fans in 2018 about her own struggles, I am glad to see 5 years later she is married and just gave birth to a son in June.
Wonderland’s kind nature yet edgy personality shines throughout her performances. Her show opened up with a distorted audio from “Alice In Wonderland”(1951). Conversations with Alice, The Mad Rabbit and Cheshire Cat are blended together over some creepy music. After a minute of the bass building up Allison Wonderland’s voice chimed in and she sang her song “I Remember” featuring deadmau5 and Kaskade. Immediately, her set was unique from every other artist I’d seen the entire weekend because she sings live while DJing. She notably sang her ballad “Fuck U Love U,” which had many members of the crowd in tears.
She puts on a great show incorporating remixes, like “Blinding Lights” by The Weekend, which she looped into her own song, “Wake Up.” This was followed by her remix of pop hit “New Rules” by Dua Lipa and a remix of “HUMBLE” by Kendrick Lamar that had everyone singing along. Another notable moment from her set that really brought the crowd together was when she played “Right Here, Right Now” by Fatboy Slim.
Overall, Allison Wonderland is one of the most impressive EDM artists on the scene right now. She is inspirational for her strength, not only through mental health issues, but also her choice to immediately get back to touring after giving birth, to support her son and her ever growing career.
