Review by Austin Sher

Following up his 2016 EP, Astoria, Zach Henry has made his return with an all new single, titled “Dream Machine”. You’ll find out why, but we loved it! Do yourself a favor and read along for our full review of the track, in addition to a background on the artist as well.

Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, Zach Henry is a folk rock singer and songwriter whose influences include The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Dr. Dog, Ween, Ty Segal, The War on Drugs, and Beck. His style is mainly indie folk infused with a punch of rock and roll. His songs are filled with playful, pop melodies and confessional vocals that walk a fine line between rebel cheekiness and desperate sincerity. In addition to his music making, he’s also a classically trained actor who’s been living in New York City for the past 6 years.

“Dream Machine” itself isn’t necessarily a new song from Zach, in fact, he let us know that he wrote the beginnings of it about 8 years ago. It wasn't until finding the recording on an old Macbook several months ago that he actually decided to complete and release the song. Once completed though, he managed to get Tom McLean of the band Modern Nomad to produce, mix, and master the song.

Now that we’ve familiarized ourselves with the artist and origins of the song, let us make it clear that we absolutely loved what we heard. Filled with inventive bass lines and unique vocal and guitar effects, this is the definition of what a fun indie rock tune should sound like. Zach tells a compelling story on “Dream Machine” that is only amplified by the diverse instrumentation and soundscape that he’s created.

After listening to his latest EP, Astoria, and comparing the sound to this newest track, we’re thrilled that this is where the artist went with his sound. If only we could get a record filled of tracks just like these, we’d be thrilled. Considering it’s been all of four years since Zach’s last proper release, we do hope that this lights the spark to create more.

With this all being said, we’re highly recommending a listen to “Dream Machine”! For all things Zach Henry, to listen, and to keep up with him online for all future updates, please check out the following links below.
