Track Review: Tell Your Friends by Wilco

Review by Austin Sher

Wilco “visited” The Late Show With Stephen Colbert this past Wednesday night to unveil their all new single, Tell Your Friends, which will directly benefit José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen.

Giving off massive vibes from their most recent album, Ode To Joy, the 5-minute stunner of a track, Tell Your Friends, is exactly what Wilco fans and music fans in general needed in this moment in time.

Seemingly positive reviews coming from fans around the world have this song on a fast track to become one of my favorite releases from the band. In typical Wilco fashion, the song does not necessarily recreate the wheel, however, it makes you instantly feel a sense of calm emotion as Jeff Tweedy’s always powerful lyrics wash over.

The instrumentation is lush, as usual, and the band is clearly as tight as they ever have been. If I had to compare the song to a human feeling, it’s like getting hugged by a best friend you haven’t seen in ages. For a moment in time, it’s almost as if the world around isn’t crumbling at all and that it’s just you and the music.

More importantly, the song was released on Bandcamp, with all proceeds going directly to José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen. A fantastic choice in charity I might add. By purchasing the track directly, which you can by visiting this link: https://wilcohq.bandcamp.com/track/tell-your-friends, you can directly benefit in providing meals and other types of relief from the COVID-19 Pandemic. So it’s perfect, you get to help AND listen to a fantastic track over and over again!

Overall, if there’s any inkling of an Ode to Joy B-Sides album coming, we’d especially love for it to sound exactly like this song. It’s wonderfully calm and makes you look within. For additional fun, the band also performed an acoustic version of potentially their most well known hit, Jesus Etc. while visiting the show last night. You can also view that as well!
