Von Schmaltzy unleashes his debut EP, "Vying Light"
Leaving nothing to the imagination and creating something incredibly diverse for the masses, you must check out Von Schmaltzy’s new EP, Vying Light. Read on for our full review of the record, in addition to a background on this artist.
Currently based out of Columbus, Ohio, Von Schmaltzy has crafted up his own take on the Goth and Post-Punk world with a clear and concise record, Vying Light. Written, recorded, mixed, and mastered all by the artist himself, you can fully expect a dense wall of sound that gives off suspenseful vibes and a great deal of passion from start to finish. If you’ve yet to dive into the realm of this genre, we highly suggest you dip your toes into this album as soon as you can.
Coming in at four tracks, spanning right around 16 minutes, Von Schmaltzy immediately transports the listener to his atmospheric world filled with allure and dramatic undertones. Centering the EP around his lo-fi vocals, you can fully hear his inspirations come in via Joy Division, New Order, and so many more. In this case, so much originality and clear ingenuity comes through in this record. We’re quite familiar with the genre due to our personal tastes, but truly he’s gone above and beyond in expanding the style.
Although the record is only four songs long, “Eternal Depths” stood out for us in a big way. Making the realization that literally everything you’re hearing instrumentally is coming from one person just takes it to the next level. The context provided prior to listening was a huge bump in what made us fall in love with Vying Light, but after listening it really solidified the raw talent coming through. Considering this was our first foray into his music as a whole, we’ve obviously come to love it in such a short time frame and will undoubtedly be following this project as long as there are consistent releases on the way.
