Troy Breslow has been performing country music his whole life, with the same enthusiasm to audiences both large and small at any given venue. Getting his start in local coffee shops and school functions, Troy has performed at all kinds of venues imaginable, including dive bars, dance halls, brewpubs, opry houses, local theaters and festivals. In 2018, amongst other accolades, Troy was recognized by VEER Music as “Country Artist of the Year” and nominated “Americana Artist of the Year” by the Tennessee Music Awards. Since then, Troy continues to strive to reach new audiences who might not otherwise experience what country music has to offer. He follows in the footsteps of artists such as Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson, Tyler Childers and James McMurtry, who have all been influenced by traditional country and Americana music.

If you’re a fan of any of the artists above, you’ll definitely appreciate what Troy’s done on “Used To Be A Jedi”. While he’s certainly got his own style, you can sense the influence in the way the song carries. As much as you might think you need to be a Star Wars fan to enjoy the song, that’s not true in the slightest. Listening to the lyrics closely, sure there’s references, but it’s still a straight up country tune that we thoroughly enjoyed.

As passive listeners of country music, it always takes a lot for us to really enjoy a country song. While that may come off as a “dig” for some fans, let us be clear in our statement that this was a song that we liked! Not every country song needs to be stereotypical in its normal sense, in fact, it’s really nice to hear something like this that actively switches it up.

With all that being said, Troy’s deep and burly voice really comes through on the track. It really ties the song together on top of the smooth acoustics, comedy charm, and topical lyrics. It goes to show that any song can be performed in style of country as long as it’s well put together. I think we can confidently say that Troy and company knocked it out of the park on this one. If you liked this, you’ll love his latest EP, Politics & Roadrage too!
