Extremely prolific in her releases so far this year, the project of theworldisugly has made a swift return with a breathtaking record titled it’s my depression, not me. Please do yourselves a favor and read our full review below, as well as an update on this artist.

It was only about 4 months ago that we reviewed theworldisugly’s 2nd LP, Dreams, but Amanda Serakowski has been hard at work and delivered another beauty in it’s my depression, not me. In such a short amount of time, this audibly feels like an even more mature work given its production quality, but it stacks up just as high compared on the songwriting end. Once again, the artist is giving a contextual glimpse into her emotional struggles and ultimately the album comes out to be delightful by the final notes.

If there’s a major highlight that we can talk about right from the top, it’s the major cohesion that this record holds from start to finish. Through 10 songs and nearly 35 minutes of playtime, Amanda immediately immerses the listener into a specific mood that doesn’t wane much through the listen. That coveted “album experience” that’s unfortunately becoming a lost art has seen a huge resurgence in it’s my depression, not me. There’s a concise storyline, an aura that the album exudes, and you feel like you’re floating on a cloud of bliss. Sure, there’s plenty of isolated singles like “the girl i am” or “april 22nd” that could be picked and pulled for playlists, but the impressive part is the flow that the entirety holds.

Lyrically speaking, the title of the album sets you up for what to expect, and there’s clearly lots of difficult topics covered. Those unfamiliar with depression as a whole will get a taste and a look inside how terrible it can be, but from a first person perspective. The vulnerability presented here is incredibly sincere and 100% worth your time and energy to individually break down the songs and connect the dots. To no surprise in the slightest, theworldisugly is quickly coming into her own and the niche she’s creating is one that we hope to see her continue to explore for years to come!
