Based out of Northern California, The Unlikely Inventor is the hard rock solo project of Ben Weaver, in which he’s masterfully taken his influence of grunge, progressive metal, and more to craft a downright rocking EP that deserves all the listens and streams. With extra time on his hands due to the events of 2020, he took the opportunity to create greatness on this all new EP.

According to Ben, he’s let us know, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got...”. With that being said, he’s absolutely taken his own quote to heart and changed things not only musically, but personally, for the better. Sitting down, spending the time, and ultimately creating something beautiful to call your own is no easy task. However with the release of Merism, he’s beat the odds of so many who attempt this feat.

Consisting of five absolutely shredding songs, Merism is a statement record. Instrumentally what The Unlikely Inventor has achieved here is highly impressive. As lovers of all things progressive, rock or not, the tangents of solos and pure instrumental breakdowns are those of the legends. We can only assume that because this is labeled as a solo project, the artist was responsible for all the sounds you’ll hear, so take that into consideration before you dive in.

One thing that Ben didn’t hold back on was the track length. While this is labeled as an EP, at least according to the amount of tracks, it has the feeling of a full and cohesive album. No idea that the artist had been left out, especially on the killer opener “Calvariæ Locus”.

Picking a favorite would be incredibly difficult as well, because frankly, they all are so powerful. We feel that this isn’t really the type of record that you’d want to hop into at random, rather a full start to finish listen would best display what the artist was really trying to go for. Potentially though, after you become more familiar with each tracks, it’s completely up to the listener and reader to listen how you please, as long as you’re listening.

Lastly, and we can’t stress this enough, if for some reason the genre of hard rock or progressive metal scares you off, don’t be scared! There’s nothing way too out there going on here, and if anything, it’ll broaden your horizons for what you may not have discovered that you like. So listen, enjoy, and let us know what you thought.
