Review by Austin Sher

Released this past week on August 21st, 2020, The Lemon Twigs have made their triumphant return with their 3rd full length album, Songs for the General Public. Please read along with us as we break down our thoughts on the band’s latest record.

Following up 2018’s Go to School, The Lemon Twigs have fused everything unique about themselves into one cohesive, and dare we say, perfect album. As fans from the beginning, it’s been such a delight to see the band go through phases with all of their releases thus far. We feel that the sound that they initially created on Do Hollywood has fully come to life and all potential was realized with this record.

Like most others, our first foray into Songs for the General Public was with the single release for “The One”. For the last few months, it’s been playing non-stop, and we were silently wishing we’d get an entire album full of rip roaring songs such as that. With the additional single releases of “Moon”, “Live in Favor of Tomorrow”, and “No One Holds You (Closer Than The One You Haven’t Met)”, there was no possible way on Planet Earth that the album could possibly be a flop.

After taking in the singles way too many times than any normal human should listen, it was album release day. The time had come. The music was here, in full. Our first listen had us absolutely rolling in happy laughter, mainly due to the surprises thrown in there, and the extremely high quality production that was delivered. The initial first listen through was glorious. We’d highly recommend that if you’re just finding out the album and plan to listen, to get yourself a high quality pair of headphones to truly hear the subtleties going on in the background.

As far as instrumentation goes, the constant throughout the album was the deep synthesizers presented. If you’re at all familiar with Jay Watson (Pond, GUM, Tame Impala) then you’ll notice the cloyingly familiar baritone bass that makes its way into almost every track. While there’s little bits here and there that we could harp on, this was one of the main parts instrumentation wise that really gave the album that cohesive feeling. As fantastic as the vocals are on the record throughout, a fully instrumental version of the record would be heaven to any music fan’s ears.

While the album had to battle with so many other releases last week, I think it’s beyond safe to say that this was our true highlight. In the grand scheme of 2020, Songs for the General Public has brought a much needed light to our lives. We highly encourage you to listen and hope you’ll feel the same. The sound is classic Twigs, it provides unbridled happiness from start to finish, and is easily a contender for Album of the Year.
