The Jacklights strike gold on their high energy debut EP, "The Jacklights"
Review by Austin Sher
The Jacklights have officially released their high energy debut EP, titled The Jacklights. We absolutely love what we heard! Read on for our full review and thoughts on the record.
Currently based out of Boston, Massachusetts, The Jacklights are a pop punk project made up of Nilagia McCoy (guitar/vocals), Michael Allen (bass), and Steve Patton (drums). The band cites their musical influences as Jawbreaker, Husker Du, Alkaline Trio, Descendents, Pretty Girls Make Graves, and Girl in a Coma. You’ll definitely be able to hear those fantastic musical influences on this lovely EP.
As far as the genre of pop punk goes, we feel that is vastly underrated and underrepresented within the music community. Growing up it’s always been a go to listen for us, so we were overly excited to dive into this record. The best part though is that it definitely lived up to our high expectations as well. Spanning five total tracks over about sixteen minutes of runtime, it was the perfect burst of energy that we needed in our day.
Instrumentally speaking, there was so much creatively happening that they managed to keep things interesting from start to finish. The energy starts immediately on the rocking opener, “Dump Him” and continues straight through to the finish. The female led vocals were also a fantastic addition, another under representation within the genre that we were thoroughly pleased and impressed with.
All in all, if you’re a fan of either punk or pop genre, this EP is definitely up your alley. We’re personally highly recommending and encouraging everyone to take a listen for themselves, you will not be disappointed. It’s a change of pace from the mainstream that all music listeners need in their life, so might as well dive on. With this all being said, it’s time to stop reading and start listening!
