The Best Around return for swirling new single, "Bitter Pill"
Back with their first single since their 2020 EP Margaret, The Best Around have made a triumphant return with a thriller of a song, “Bitter Pill”. Read on for our full review of the track, as well as a refresher on the band.
Made up of Camron Rushin (Songwriter/Vocals), Todd Pruner (Guitar/Bass/Drums/Synths), and Jon Merz (Guitar/Horns/Keyboards), The Best Around are crafting up an unconventional indie rock sound that we’ve fallen in love with. After covering their 2020 EP Margaret last year, we’ve been anxiously awaiting the follow up, and thankfully, it has surpassed all of our wildest expectations. We can’t wait for you all to give this one a spin!
What you’re going to get with the music of The Best Around is an inviting song that captures the best moments of experimental music. With a vocal delivery slightly reminiscent of Stephen Malkmus and Conor Oberst, it’s the thing that has kept us coming back for more and more. There was a certain soothing nature to the wildness coming from “Bitter Pill”, but enough going on instrumentally to keep us enthused from the opening moments on.
While yes, this falls under the large umbrella of indie rock, it’s really so much more than that. Said by the band themselves, they take influence from New Wave, Post Punk, and Neo-Psychedelic sounds, however what they’ve got going on is entirely in a league of its own. We instantly envisioned ourselves flailing around a carnival-like setting while listening to “Bitter Pill”. It filled us with a bit of unease, but in a way that had us going back for more listens to uncover the meaning of it at all. It’s understandable if that doesn’t make sense, which is why you really need to listen for yourselves to get the message.
Our true hopes here are that another EP or even full length album come from this exact sound. Plain and simple, we loved it, and need more in this exact style as it’s like nothing we’ve heard in quite some time. We plan on keeping up the band’s latest releases, and you should to, by checking out the important links below to listen and follow along for more. Enjoy!
