Next up in Sound on High’s new series, #NewMusicEveryWeek, is their wonderful new acoustic single, “Buttercup.”. Read along with us as we give an in-depth review into what we thought of their new track, as well as a bit of background and insight into the band.

Coming directly from Legenderry, Ireland, Sound on High are a group of long time friends, singers and songwriters, making up songs about love, life, loss and anything else. They started the band while in quarantine, when they began writing and recording their material virtually between their homes in Legenderry and Essex. All it took for them to start creating was a microphone and an iPhone.

Made up of two members, Sound on High consists of two guitars, a piano, and a double bass. The band let us know you can also hear a creaky chair sometimes as well. They’re classically trained musicians who are creating nostalgic sounding acoustic rock, with traces of country, soul, blues, and beautiful pop melodies.

Digging into the music now, “Buttercup.” was such a fantastic introduction to this band. Listening to the rest of their singles, it was truly difficult to pick a favorite that they’ve released thus far, however, I think this newest single is definitely a contender. Like mentioned above, “Buttercup.” invokes a sense of nostalgia and thinking back to the good times. Not only is that prevalent in the sound of the track, but the very obvious lyrics as well. It’s a story being told throughout the song that really keeps you glued to every word.

While the vocals certainly have a lofi charm to them, it was the whistling towards the back half of the single that really had us surprised. Whistling is such a difficult thing to accomplish in music nowadays, it’s also extremely rare to be pulled off as well. Unless you’re Andrew Bird or Father John Misty, it’s a risk, but Sound on High definitely pulled it off. The song overall was cute sounding, but with a very mature message and tone to it. It’s a pop ballad at its core, and a good one at that.

Overall, we’re really looking forward to seeing what else the band has in store for us, because at this point in their career, you can certainly call us fans!
