Sofia Kirwan-Baez soothes the soul on lush record, "Take One and a Half"
Presented to the world officially on February 7th, 2021, Sofia Kirwan-Baez has shared her lush debut album, Take One and a Half. Read along with us for our full review of the record, as well as a background on the artist as well.
Classically trained singer and songwriter Sofia Kirwan-Baez has beyond wowed us with the release of her debut record. Considering she’s been writing songs most of her life, this form of self-expression has manifested into something truly magnificent. Currently based at the OSO Arts Centre (Barnes), you can catch her regularly performed live-streamed lounge night. It’s quickly become a pipe dream to witness this in person.
Having spent most of her young life in France, the artist moved around quite a bit, which quickly led to her “finding solace in a climate of changing constants”. As tough as that must have been, we’re thankful that the coping mechanism happened to be creating beauty in its most majestic form.
On Take one and a Half, Sofia manages to create her own world in just 8 songs and a 30 minute total run time. What could be described as lounge style music, Sofia’s passion within her lyricism jolts to the top of our many compliments we have on the record. From start to finish, there’s a true sense of calm and easiness that comes directly from her vocals. They’re warm and inviting and openly welcome the reader and listener to dive into a highly specific atmosphere that she’s evoking.
Featuring mainly just a piano and her angelic vocals, her overall sound doesn’t rely on cheap tricks or wild bits of instrumentation. This right here is music at its purest form. The setting that we’d imagine we’d enjoy this most in is the setting that she seems to perform in the most, a lounge. The feeling of kicking back on a cold winter’s night, hot drink in hand, and Sofia to perform this in full would be an absolute highlight.
For the music lovers and aficionados out there, this is without a doubt a beautiful composition and cohesive piece that you need to be listening to. Seeing as though it’s only her first album of originals, our high hopes are that there’s more in the works someday soon. This music is a very particular type of feeling that normally we’d need to be in the mood to listen to, however, there’s just something truly special about that makes it feel like it could be a consistent album in the rotation. However you’d like to embark on a listen, the true hope is that we just want you to dive in.
With all this being said, do yourselves a favor and get into it. For all things Sofia Kirwan-Baez, to listen, and to keep up with all future releases and information, please check out the following links below.
