The Lehigh Valley has birthed a lot of musical talent, but few acts have shown the relentless work ethic and creative dynamism of Smooth Retsina Glow. Their latest album, Through the Needles Eye, is a testament to the band's resilience and evolution, having survived lineup changes, a global pandemic, and countless obstacles along the way. What emerges from the other side is not just a collection of songs but a refined, genre-bending piece of indie rock that’s full of surprises.

Written entirely by guitarist and vocalist Colin Wolf, the album showcases the band in peak form. The current lineup, featuring co-vocalist Natalie Expraxia, drummer Quincy Wellen, and a rotating cast of bass subs—including Billy Voight, Grant Wagner, and Devin Wachter—seems to have unlocked new creative potential. The chemistry within this group is palpable, and it permeates every track, making the record feel alive with energy, collaboration, and passion.

In our interview with Colin Wolf, he opened up about the process of making Through the Needles Eye, highlighting the importance of the new lineup in shaping the album’s direction. One of the most striking features of Through the Needles Eye is its use of contrasting moods and textures. The album effortlessly shifts from fierce, razor-like guitar riffs to mellow, slower-paced grooves, providing an expansive sonic journey for the listener.

The opening track kicks off with an explosive energy that sets the tone for the rest of the album. It's a high-octane introduction, featuring Wolf’s fiery guitar work, a trademark of the band’s sound, alongside Wellen’s sharp drumming and Expraxia’s standout vocals. The interplay between Wolf and Expraxia creates a dynamic push-and-pull, adding layers of emotional depth to the music. Expraxia’s voice is the perfect foil to Wolf’s more aggressive delivery, giving the songs a balance that keeps the listener engaged.

As the album progresses, Smooth Retsina Glow showcases their ability to seamlessly blend genres, moving from indie rock to hints of jazz, blues, and even a little punk. Wolf’s songwriting stands out not only for its musical complexity but also for its lyrical depth. His words often reflect on personal struggles, resilience, and growth, themes that resonate deeply in a post-pandemic world.

The production quality on Through the Needles Eye is also worth noting. The album sounds crisp and polished, yet it retains the raw edge that has become synonymous with Smooth Retsina Glow’s live performances. Wolf, who has always been hands-on in the studio, credits the band's evolving synergy for the polished yet authentic sound.

Through the Needles Eye is a statement piece from a band that refuses to be pigeonholed. With its sweeping dynamics, intricate arrangements, and powerful performances, it’s an album that showcases the breadth of Smooth Retsina Glow’s talents. Wolf and his bandmates have created something special—a record that feels both personal and universal, brimming with energy, emotion, and creativity.
