Review by Austin Sher

In a touching tribute track titled “Thunder (Solo on the Dancefloor)”, Ryal crafted a brand new synthpop single to remember their close friend who passed earlier this year from COVID-19. Please read along with us for our detailed thoughts on the track, as well as additional into the track and artists.

For those who may be unaware, Ryal are a duo comprised of Jacque and producer Aaron Nevezie. The song was initially released on October 30th of this year, but as of today (December 4th, 2020), there is now a fantastic music video that has accompanied the already stellar track.

This is an unprecedented Ryal track, in terms of sound, context, and production. As the story goes from the duo, this song is specifically dedicated to the memory of lead singer Jacque’s best friend and former college roommate who unfortunately passed away from COVID-19 earlier this year. The song is meant to give off a feeling of the 90’s club scene, in which their friend (JD) was involved in during the time’s heyday.

As for the music itself, it’s an extremely well produced synth pop ballad that hits in all the best ways. At its core, it’s certainly emotional in a ballad context, but it’s also got an atmosphere that surrounds it that gives off the feeling to stop and think about things. Of course the lyrics are hard hitting considering the message surrounding it, but what was even more astounding was the music video that Ryal created for the song. We don’t want to give too much away, because we’d prefer you watched for yourself, so we’ve added all the links at the bottom of this article for you listen and watch.

As mentioned, this isn’t a typical Ryal track, but honestly that’s ok. Seeing as they’ve been creating new music all summer, this could potentially be a slight shift in sound compared to what they’ve been churning out in the past. That’s ok though because artists create based on life experiences and what’s influencing their day to days. While it’s an obvious somber feeling and experience that they must be going through, we truly feel that there’s no better way to grieve than to create something as long lasting and powerful than a song in dedication. It’s something that can live forever and provide important memories for years to come.

With all this being said though, we’re highly recommending and suggesting you check out the single and the video, in addition to the rest of Ryal’s work. All important links can be found below.
