Melbourne-based five-piece indie rock project, Plastic, take influences and have modeled their sound which is sitting somewhere between Deerhoof and Deerhunter. As lovers of both of those bands, our expectations were quite a bit higher than normal, however, they took those individualistic sounds and confidently created a record that infuses their own style into every song from start to finish.

They’re currently blending art-world sophistication with “music nerd sensibilities and an indie-rock smirk”. The album twists and convulses in the best way possible. As we journey with them through swirls of zigzagging melody, hiccupping grooves, and erratic mood swings, the record has quickly proved that Plastic are the real deal. We don’t know what is about Australian-based bands these days, but they’re all releasing absolutely golden albums such as this.

Coming in at 10 tracks, spanning just over 30 minutes, New Hands is a perfect bite sized rock album that took the genre and fantastically carved out its own niche within sound, instrumentation, and the undeniable vocal delivery throughout. Sonically speaking, there’s so much to unpack on a first listen that we immediately had to go back through it a second time just to hear all the subtleties we might have missed.

From the opening notes on “I Could Be Here All The Time” to the fuzzy and warm guitar tones on “Baby Steps”, it would honestly be near impossible to pick a favorite track! We mean this with the most amount of sincerity, there isn’t a weak track on New Hands. Considering this is a debut album, we can confidently state how excited we are to hear more from the band as the years come.

With this all being said, please do yourselves a huge favor and kick off your week with repeated listens of this album, you will not regret it. There’s so much to enjoy across the record.
