Fresh off the release of their newest album Fission, we got the opportunity to sit down and speak with the members of Odd City! Please check out our full interview with the band below.

For those unfamiliar, Odd City are a Detroit-based band made up of Mike Szuminski (vocals, lead guitar), Mike Kap (bass, vocals), Pavel Guysinsky (rhythm guitar) and Brett Redwood (drums). With their new record Fission finally out, it was the cherry on top of our multiple listens to be able to really pick their brains and get the specific details on how it came together, the meaning behind it all, and what might be on the horizon for the future. If this is your introduction to the band, it’s a conversation you won’t want to miss.

Comparing to what we think is “normal” of other musical projects, Odd City certainly went about this record’s creation in a roundabout way. They didn’t necessarily have a singer when it all started out and even turned the writing process into whoever can contribute can get some songs in. In our opinion, it doesn’t really matter how it was made, because the end result has been nothing but stellar. Fission as a whole is a complete rocker from beginning to end, and with the help of their producer Chuck Alkazian of Pearl Sound Studios, it’s as crisp and clean as can be with that hard rock edge.

We paid close attention in our discussion towards the singles “Slink” and “The Upside Down”, but don’t let that sway your opinion into just giving those a spin. We found Fission to be cohesive in the sense that it flows effortlessly from beginning to end. Not everything needs to be a concept record or filled with overarching stories, mainly because we found the instrumental side of this record to be the real shining light. There’s infinite solos and passages that stand out, even just through its track length of 7 songs. With all that being said, don’t skip out on a wonderful record, we can’t wait for more from Odd City.
