Occurrence expand their sound on single & video for "Universe Moves So Fast"
Just about a month since our last review of their single “Fudge”, Occurrence have returned once again to continue the rollout of their newest album with a track titled “Universe Moves So Fast”. Please keep reading as we share our complete thoughts on the song.
As the band’s newest album SLOW VIOLENCE continues to come together, Occurrence have crushed it once again with a grand new single called “Universe Moves So Fast”. Accompanied by a music video that we’ve linked below, in which we highly recommend you watch too, the group brought on actor and musician Peter Mark Kendall (The Americans) to lend a helping hand with even more guitars. Displaying their endless talents and experimentation, it’s undoubtedly another piece of art that we’re recommending you get into.
On the background of it all, it goes a lot deeper than we could have ever imagined. Says Occurrence, “this song is inspired by a saying in Spanish, ‘inocente palomita que te dejaste engañar,’ which translates to “naive little pigeon, you’ve let yourself be fooled.” Ultimately it revolves around asking to borrow something, when the truth is you’re actually stealing it. It’s normally said on April Fool’s Day, but in this case can be attributed to loss and the fear of it. We’d urge everyone to really attempt to connect the dots when listening because this feels like the most complex song lyrically that we’ve experienced from Occurrence so far. Paired with the aforementioned music video that further adds on that complexity from an artist’s perspective, the band pulled out all the stops in projecting a specific message that covers deep themes.
The actual music portion is as impressive as ever too, although we were definitely a bit surprised by its lofi feel and aesthetic. The vocal portions were certainly a favorite and we really enjoyed the stylistic feel of having them sit in the back of the mix while the instrumentals stole the show being right up in the forefront. While we wouldn’t quite classify it as shoegaze, there’s absolutely some elements that are shown through, adding a bit of pizzazz and genre-bending which is right up this band’s alley. Similarly to “Fudge”, the song feels entirely like its own new genre and style, a major feat, especially in today’s music landscape. “Universe Moves So Fast” feels fresh, original, and somehow has us even more excited for the full record than before.
