notthatloud blend multiple genres on impressive new single, "Colours"
Review by Austin Sher
Shared today officially on November 20th, 2020, notthatloud are back with another fantastic single, “Colours”. We are loving it! Please read along with us for our full review of the song, in addition to a background on the artists as well.
This electronic and alt-pop music duo from Germany is currently making waves within the industry. Consisting of Rosie, taking care of the vocals, lyrics and graphic design, and Max who composes, produces and engineers the audio this duo are proving to be something special. From a musical perspective though, the two come from very different backgrounds; Rosie comes from the bedroom pop and acoustic singer songwriter genre, while Max has a lot of experience in classical music as well as electronic music.
Coming together as one to create notthatloud, the two are experimenting within a massive variety of genres within their overall sound. It’s part jazz, lo-fi, and even glimmers of jazz tend to pop up as well. The duo have let us know though that they will not be pigeon-holing themselves into one sound, as they continuously love to push the limits of their sound and explore all of their creative sides.
On “Colours” specifically though, it is a story about how people hide their true selves with flashy colours. outfits. and fancy embellishments to impress others, and how we all fall victim to this unconsciously. The song explores these themes within its lyrics quite clearly, but at the same time, is also extremely fun and innovative to listen to. Max and Rosie have created absolute greatness here, all the while mixing genres that we know of love. It’s fresh and fun, and we truly need more of this music in our lives.
Loving both jazz and electronic sounds separately, hearing the marriage of the two come together to create one catchy track was a neat surprise. Rosie’s vocals are pure perfection from start to finish, whereas Max’s music production and addition of all the audio effects create a sonic atmosphere that was unbelievably professional sounding. Seeing as they both come from separate backgrounds, we’re truly happy they’ve found each other and begun to create, because we will no doubt be following notthatloud as long as they keep crafting wonderful renditions such as this.
With this all being said, “Colours” is a certified hit. We absolutely recommend and encourage the reader to kick off their weekend with multiple listens, you’re going to love it!
