Review by Austin Sher

While Nimrawd’s record The Gamins was Initially released in early 2020, the artist is back with an intriguing music video surrounding one of the singles, “Teacups”. We are loving it! Please read along with us for our analysis of the track, in addition to a background on the artist as well.

For those who happen to be unaware, Nimrawd is an electronic musician based out of Montreal, Canada. He writes lo-fi instrumental music using live bass, old-school hip-hop beats, and field sounds. While he was a bass player in an indie rock band for 15 years—and currently the bass player and keyboardist for a more experimental iteration of that band—he started writing electronic music as a solo musician in 2018. The inspiration for the artist at the beginning was more of a lo-fi electronic feel, alluding to musicians like Tobacco, Odd Nosdam, and good-old-fashioned hip-hop crate diggers like Damu the Fudgemunk.

His sound quickly turned into improvising bass lines over GarageBand hip-hop beats, in which he added in the endless library of patches on Logic Pro. If you like the album (and the track), which you will, Nimrawd is currently working on a new LP that is tentatively slated for an early-2021 release, which are we absolutely thrilled about!

Speaking about “Teacups” specifically, with a focus on the song and music video, we were absolutely enthralled with what we see. To be as frank as possible, the art of interpretive dance is something that we feel is underutilized and dying out. To implement it on this song specifically was a fantastic call. While the song itself is less on the electronic side, leaning more towards ambient, a slow and relaxed video like the one created was the way to go. It lets you slow down, while watching, but also lets you zero in on the actual music you’re absorbing.

Now we don’t want to give too much away on the single or music video, because we’d so much prefer you’d listen for yourselves. With that being said, we couldn’t not listen to the album in full, so we did! Coming in at 7 tracks, spanning 30 minutes in runtime, there was just so much to unwrap and love on The Gamins. We’ll be honest, having no prior experience with the music of Nimrawd, we didn’t really know what to expect. However after listening in full, he’s the real deal! This music goes deep, is filled with love, passion, and so much creativity. If you’re looking for an electronic-based record jam-packed with interesting samples and a cohesive feel to it, look no further, because this one’s for you.

As previously mentioned, Nimrawd has new music (hopefully) dropping in the new year. Let it be known right now that we’ll be keeping an extremely close eye on the release, because we need more! After your hopefully multiple listens, we’re confident that you will too. So for now, check out the album, music video for “Teacups”, and more!
