Coming in at a runtime of 42 minutes, spanning 12 songs, Mighty Good Road have successfully accomplished a feat that not a lot of artists are taking on these days. As mentioned, Popular Folk is a record consisting of original songs and famous classics, turned folk. While we’d love to do a track by track analysis, we think it would be much better for you to check out the full thing for yourself. We’ll definitely share our highlights with you though.

Overall, the record paces very nicely with an almost one on one off with an original and cover. If you’re a fan of Guns’ N Roses, Lorde, or Radiohead, you’ll certainly be happy to hear the folksy inspired versions covered on the record, we know we were. It’s honestly difficult to pick a favorite, but considering we’re lifelong Radiohead fans, the cover of “Electioneering” is truly something to behold. It’s not a song I would have ever imagined hearing performed in this genre, however, it works quite well. That goes with “Welcome to the Jungle” too. Normally you’d be rocking out, but the more laidback version is a nice take on it as well.

While the covers are impressive overall, the project’s original songs are something to behold as well. Our personal favorites were “Wall Street Would” and “Toe That Party Line”. Both fantastic songs that blended right into the mix of the album. They’re fantastic on their own, but in the context of the sound and atmosphere that was created on Popular Folk, we’d love to hear a full album of originals that sound just like this.

As a genre, straightforward folk is not something we listen to all that often. With that being said though, that’s definitely going to change. The artist was far too kind to send us a vinyl copy of the record, which is how we experienced it on our first listen, and it really just became that much more impressive to hear the tracks played from start to finish. This was our first experience into the music of Mighty Good Road, but it certainly won’t be our last. We highly recommend and encourage you to check out the record for yourself!
