Mellowtail exceed expectations on debut single, "Dissolve"
Putting together a truly eclectic mix of sound for their debut single, consider us super impressed with Mellowtail’s first offering, “Dissolve”. Do yourselves a big favor here and read on for our full featured review of the track, in addition to a background on the band.
Hailing from the suburbs of New Jersey, Mellowtail are a progressive groove rock band that are putting each member’s diverse musical tastes to the test, all the while carving out a very unique sound for themselves. On their debut single “Dissolve”, they’ve given listeners a small taste of what they’re made of, and let us tell you, we’re going to need more as soon as humanly possible. This is certainly a song that we can recommend you all check out.
On our first impressions of the song, we immediately were flooded with the feelings that Radiohead’s OK Computer gave us solely based on the tones of instrumentation used here. Now you’ll quickly realize that there are definitely reggae and soul roots being compounded upon, however that progressive rock sound comes through like a shining light. Seriously, the way they were able to balance so many different genres on this near five minute track was audibly striking.
Speaking on the production side of things, “Dissolve” is crisp, clear, and poignant in all the best ways possible. We recommend listening on a nice pair of headphones or sound system for the maximum effects and to not miss out on any subtleties. Perhaps the redeeming factor of it at all was the passionate and emotional vocal style being delivered here. The lead singer had us hanging on every word, trying to make sense of the message of it at all. We know for sure we’ll have to go back for repeated listens to attempt to connect the dots.
Without giving too much away here, because we sincerely want you to listen, this is about as inventive and forward thinking of a debut as we could’ve hoped for. All the elements and bases have set for a bright future from Mellowtail. Even better though, they’re planning out an EP that’s got a release date for sometime at the end of 2021. Needless to say, we’ll be following along closely as they gear up for this record that we’re already convincing ourselves we’re going to love. We think you will too!
