Like nothing we’ve ever heard before, Marlo Owczarzak has just released her full thoughts and works behind her latest, Building Cities. Do yourselves a favor and read along with us, in addition to a background on the artist as well.

Folk pop singer and songwriter, Marlo Owczarzak is mainly known for her stripped down piano ballads, lush vocals, and feelings of nostalgia. Based out of Indiana, Marlo has proved that she can seriously do it all. She writes, sings, designs her own visuals and videos, amongst other talents as well.

Now the reason we mentioned that this is nothing we’ve ever heard before is because Building Cities is mainly an “album” or collection of voice memos, studio sessions, and a full behind the scenes look at how Marlo’s song “Cities” came to fruition. What you’ll hear on this collection are an instrumental, commentary on the song itself, and really just a look inside the artist’s head on how everything came about. If you happen to be a fan of the podcast Song Exploder, this is exactly what you need to be listening to.

We have to admit that 99.9% of the music that comes our way is prefaced with a few valuable sentences on the experience of recording the song. Most of the time it’s vague and never brought to light for the listener or the reader to enjoy. Having it become a true look into the artist’s brain is one of the coolest things that has been sent our way. Marlo, thank you, because you’re changing up how things should be done.

As for the actual song “Cities” that comes at the end of the collection of thoughts, well it’s absolutely breathtaking. Filled with imagery, thoughtfulness, and that signature Marlo sound, it really is all it was built up to be. Listening to 7 “songs” that prefaced the main event before actually listening to “Cities” made it all the better as well. If you consider yourself to be a music nerd, or really just want to put yourself into the shoes of what a true artist goes through, then listen away.

There’s nothing negative in the slightest that we could possibly say about the artist or her process, as every journey is unique to the artist. What this has done for us really is make us fans. After listening to “Cities” multiple times at this point and loving it a little bit more with each listen, we had no choice but to check out her debut EP, Broken Lyrics, which to no surprise was also fantastic. We won’t get too into how much we loved it, because the focus here is on “Cities”, but you should also give that a spin as well.

All in all though, Marlo’s opened our minds and hearts a little bit more than we expected today, and for that we thank her again. To all the readers out there, give this one a listen, you won’t be disappointed. Enjoy!
