Mark Houston crafts a marvelous new single, "The Way It Goes"
Freshly released on February 26th, 2021, Mark Houston has officially shared his second single, “The Way It Goes”. We’re loving it! Please read along with us as we share our complete thoughts on the track, in addition to a look at the artist as well.
Currently representing the music scene in Spokane, Washington, Mark Houston is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who is injecting his own spark into what could be described as alternative indie folk music. Gearing up for his debut album set for release this year, we’re absolutely thrilled with what’s been shared so far.
Fortunately for Mark, he’s had some help from some equally talented artists to help form his music. Mixed and mastered by Jimmy Hill at Amplified Wax Recording Studio, “The Way It Goes” features Luke Westermeyer (of Jacklando) on drums/percussion and Sooyoun Park on vocals/violin, among other special guests.
So the story goes on what the song’s actually about, Mark filled us in and let us know that the concept has centered around the “confident feeling of finding one's self after a difficult breakup” Having been through similar experiences ourselves, it’s relatable tracks like these that make it all too easy to vibe along with, especially when it sounds as good as this.
Lyrically speaking, Mark has nailed the context and atmosphere that you’d expect from a story like this. While yes, the song can feel poppy and upbeat at times, it also doesn’t get too out of control and lends itself to having the listener focus in on the lyricism. Instrumentally though, Houston and the team knocked it out of the park. It’s diverse in sound and sticks to its folk roots despite veering off to be a bit experimental at times. However you’d like to describe it, or however it makes you feel, it’s outstanding in our opinion.
Seeing that just two songs have been released under the artist so far, we’d have to go ahead and confidently claim that he’s got two winners on his hands. While it should be no surprise in the slightest that we’re going to recommend you listen to “The Way It Goes”, we also would love for you to give “Open up the Pages” a spin as well. If this is any indication of what the debut record is going to sound like, then count us in 100%.
All in all though, this release has been a bright spot in our week. As lovers of all things folk, it’s always a pleasure to see blossoming artists keeping the genre alive and adding their own ingenuity to the mix. We’ll be streaming this non stop, but mainly will have our sights set on the debut. Enjoy!
