Keeping it quite introspective on the lyrical end, Marissa M’s bombastic performance of “Who I Am” has quickly shot to the top as one of our favorite songs of the year so far. Fusing together a synth-inspired sound of the 80’s with a touch of modern, she’s truly created something dynamic here in terms of what a full hearted performance should sound and feel like. Plain and simple, we’ve thoroughly enjoyed our multiple listens and think everyone out there is going to feel the same.
We’re all on the journey to find ourselves or figure out where we belong in any context of this wild world and thankfully Marissa M’s “Who I Am” does the difficult job of helping and pushing us in the right direction to answer the age-old question. While this is only her third official single release thus far, she carries herself like a professional who’s already decided the route she’s going to take in music. The fact that she can deliver up instant classics like this so early on in her career is outstanding, but you won’t fully understand until you give it a spin.
Taking modern influences like The Weekend and blending together with past greats like Eurythmics is no easy task, but she’s also managed to bring a whole lot of her own personality into the mix too. We’ve mentioned that our favorite part of this song are her vocals, and that stands true, but you can’t help but vibe quickly with the intense instrumentation that really sets the tone for the song. At only about two and a half minutes in length, she wastes no time getting to the point and holds the listener’s attention nearly immediately.
For this Danish-German singer and songwriter, it appears that the sky's the limit for everything she’s going to achieve.
