Singer and songwriter Mae Krell is celebrating something huge, the two year anniversary of their sobriety with a celebratory song, “are you sure?”. This acoustic folk pop track has consumed us since its release and the story behind it is just as riveting. Currently representing the New York City music scene, we’re confident that Mae is the next big thing in indie folk music.

There’s a certain honesty and straightforwardness that a successful artist has to have when creating music that’s lyrically focused. In this case, Mae is openly exploring the low points of one’s life that make you forget the immense amount of progress you’ve made. To say this song is “raw” would be an understatement. It’s open, emotional, and direct to the point in the overall context of the story.

Seeing as though Mae has seen major successes with the releases of past singles “wash” and a debut EP, Anabasis, it’s coming as no surprise to us that the follow up here is just as good, if not better than what’s already been out. What could basically be described as just an artist singing you a story while an acoustic guitar does its thing in the background would be too simple. It’s more than that. There’s a very subtle yet impressive production happening in the background that has helped to form this emotional thriller of a single.

The most impressive part of the song should go without saying, but it was Mae’s vocals, hands down. The trembling shakiness was eerily reminiscent of a young Julien Baker, but the overall control and way that she was able to stay consistent and share the story was commanding. We really think it should go without saying at this point in the write up, but our recommendation couldn’t be stronger for you to listen to “are you sure?”. It’s sure to get you in your feels, but from a place of resonation and relating.

Wrapping it up though, this was our first foray into the music of Mae Krell, and let it be known right now that it won’t be our last. We’re extremely excited to see where the artist takes the direction of the sound in the future, but for now, we’ll be spinning “are you sure?”.
