Caryl Archer, also known as Lucid Letters, is a songwriter and producer based out of the North of England. She has been writing her own songs for over 20 years, and began teaching herself recording and production at the age of 17. Caryl works in a number of different disciplines. For many years she tried to follow the most common advice and specialize in just one, but found that to be too stifling. Now she embraces her ‘Jill of all trades’ approach and works on all aspects of her creative process, from penning the songs, to fiddling with the CSS on her website. In 2019 she decided to take a full year off releasing and promoting music, focusing instead on rebranding herself and her sound. In June of 2020, she released her debut EP as Lucid Letters, Portmanteau, featuring four new original tracks and their instrumentals.

If you enjoyed her June 2020 EP, you’re going to love this one as well! It’s not quite a departure in sound from Portmanteau, but more of an evolution into finding her new sound. On this EP specifically, she worked with three other people, so the only two tracks 100% self-produced are “We Need Nothing” and “Dancing Without You”. You might remember this past week when we covered a fantastic artist named Wind Meets West. Well, he happily accepted the offer to be listed as a featuring artist on the EP. If “The Summer” happens to be your favorite track, that might be why!

After listening to both Portmanteau and We Are Now, it’s incredibly difficult to fully clarify on which was our “favorite”. In a sense, there doesn’t need to be a favorite considering both EP’s were expertly crafted and both have their own redeeming factors. To be fully honest, we’ll let you be the judges on picking a favorite. For now though, the focus is on We Are Now and trying to decide on the 5 songs featured which stood out the most! As mentioned above, “The Summer” is a clear standout, as the feature with Wind Meets West was a wonderful surprise. However, listening to ‘Dancing Without You” instantly made us get up and dance, by ourselves! It’s really that infectious in the sense that you’ve almost got no choice but to groove.

As far as instrumentation goes within the EP, there’s so much originality and creativity flowing through each and every track that the entire record is just begging to be replayed as many times as possible. At least in Los Angeles where we’re located, summer is swiftly coming to an end, and no better piece of music could be played than a record like this that highlights so many “summer” emotions. Instrumentation including synthesizers, electronic drums, and Caryl’s voice are all we really needed to make this complete.

If it happens to still be scorching hot by yourselves, or any weather for that matter, this is an EP worth checking out. At only 5 songs in track length, it’s absolutely worth your time and listening. We know for a fact we’ll be keeping on with everything Lucid Letters that comes out from now on, because we’re new fans! With that being said, stop reading, and start listening!
