With a debut EP just released that highlights so many of Lost Martian’s musical capabilities, we couldn’t help but quickly fall in love with the sound. Please read on for our glowing review of the record, as well as a background on the artist.

Led by the ever talented Thea McKay, Lost Martian is her musical project that has simply blown us away due to the versatility in sound that debut EP Otherworldly has presented. Strung together by compelling lyricism and instrumentals that fully embody the heart of punk rock, this record was a complete and cohesive listening experience that we won’t forget. Without a doubt, we recommend you check it out as soon as possible.

Coming in at 5 total tracks, spanning right around 17 minutes in runtime, Lost Martian immediately throws you into the deep end with the heavy opener, “You Can’t Come Back”. Filled with innovative songwriting that is certainly one of this artist’s specialties, each song is a slice of Thea’s personal life. Like any artist that’s brave enough to share all of themselves with complete strangers of the world, we commend her on using these personal experiences to create absolutely beautiful stories, paired with an edgy sound that had our interest piqued instantly.

On the background of the record, it mainly deals with stories surrounding isolation, doubt, and “the clutter of one’s own mind due to lost love”. Putting the message aside for just a moment and focusing on the other highlights, we particularly enjoyed the sort of lightheartedness and catchiness of the instrumentals here. Of course they’re channeling the punk rock spirit, but in a modern world that’s introduced a ton of original flairs into the mix. Thea’s vocals also added a really complex layer, especially on songs like “So Quick” and “Summer Tears”

It’s legitimately difficult to pick out any negatives or provide any critiques here, mainly because the entirety of Otherworldly is such a full and well-rounded record. For a debut from a clearly talented artist, it’s got us quite excited to hear a follow up in the coming years. In the meantime though, we highly suggest you check out Otherworldly, you’re going to sincerely enjoy this one!
